Why Hoodia was On So Many Major TV News?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Janette Lee In May 30 of 2003, BBCs correspondent Tom Mangold traveled to Africa with his camera man. He reported that both he and his camera man eat a small banana sized Hoodia section that suppressed their appetite for 24 hours. Then in November of 2004, Leslie Stahl from CBS traveled to Africa with a translator and guide. She also had the chance to sample a small amount of Hoodia plant. She then subsequently broadcasted her experience on 60 minutes. She commented how small an amount she was giving to eat. Her experience is the same as Tom Mangolds. Both experienced no hunger for a day. And they both noted that they had no side effect what so ever. And the fresh hoodia plant tasted kind like a cucumber. In October 2005, Janet Shamlian from NBC news did a similar report on Hoodia on 60 minutes as well. Her report was not done in the native South African, no fresh plant was used. Instead, the report was about a Today Show staff using a supplement that containing Hoodia extract. In addition to that, GNC spokesman said that was one of their best sellers. Hoodia is a plant that grows deep inside the African Kalahari desert. It thrives in extreme temperature and very slow to mature. A nature supply of that is quite limited. According to CBS, every year, people spent $40 billion dollars to acquire products that can help them to slim down to obtain better health, better looks. But none of them worked very well. The nature ingredient in Hoodia fools the brain to think that the stomach is full, no desire to eat for a number of hours. The San Bushman has been eating Hoodia Diet for thousands of years. British company Phytopharm, after 20 years of research, finally isolated its active ingredient, they named it p57. With that identification, a patent was filed for its use in weight loss. The research shows that eating hoodia diet should elevate the blood sugar level, subsequently, the brain senses the high blood sugar level, and was tricked to believe the person is full, therefore no hunger signal was sent out even though the person has not really eating anything other than the Hoodia diet. Dr. Richard Dixey of Phytopharm says this is the magic of Hoodia diet. Due to the difficult of large scale synthesis of P57, Pfizer has backed out their plan to manufacture and distribute Hoodia pills. Phytopharm then decided to use nature Hoodia extracts to product diet pills. Ever since that happened, many manufacturers have started produce hoodia diet that containing African hoodia extract. They suggest that two or three little tablets will suppress the appetite for the entire day. But quality of the products from various manufactures is not guaranteed. Mangold who traveled to South African in 2003 also tested some leading brand of Hoodia diet pills. He reported that some of them do not have any Hoodia in it. Even though name was not mentioned, he suggests people to be a bit more patient to wait for Phytopharm/Unilevers product release after the completion of clinical research. It was believed that only certain types of Hoodia plant are effective and some may be toxic. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa has evaluated the hoodia plant for toxicity. They concluded that animals where were on hoodia diet has lost weight, but no toxic side effect has been found. With the medias attention on Hoodia diet, the public has become increasing aware that a nature remedy exist for hunger control. Phytopharm and Unilever have announced in April of 2006, that they had completed phase one of a five phase clinical research program. With 4 more clinical trial programs to complete, it may still be many years before they can release a viable version of African hoodia extract to the market. Since there is no data to show what kind of long term effect a Hoodia diet would exert, the painstaking, time consuming research is necessary. The American Obesity Association has reported that currently (Jan 2007), there are approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese. And Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. No Wonder that many manufactures and distributors want to sell Hoodia diet to the public now. All the data on Hoodia diet so far are positive. Not like other weight loss product, Hoodia has shown no stimulatory effects and San Bushman has exited for 100,000 years, eating them on their nomadic hunting trips with no apparent side effects. One thing we have to be aware of though, some unscrupulous people will try to sell product that are not genuine to make a quick buck. It is important to be aware on what you are buying when looking for your hoodia diet. Las Vegas Weddings at the Venetian

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Rebecca Johnson The Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas offers couples many wonderful wedding ceremony locations. They have three beautifully decorated wedding chapels which can each seat as many as fifty guests, or can be combined into one large chapel that accommodates larger groups of up to 150. Chapel weddings are far from the only thing that they offer though. The Venetian also has two stunning Venice themed ceremony locations were couples can say their vows. The first offers couples the opportunity to get married while floating down a canal in a gondola which comes complete with a gondolier. The other Venice inspired site that is offered is a romantic bridge in the middle of a replica of St. Marks Square. There are definitely a lot of opportunities available to plan a lovely wedding at this hotel and they offer many traditional wedding packages to choose from. These packages include the standard wedding staples such as flowers and photography and some even include room suites, salon and spa services, and meals. The Venetian also presents many reception options. If you are looking for a smaller gathering, they offer hospitality parlors which can accommodate up to forty guests for a two to three hour reception. They also have many delicious restaurants that could serve as a more informal reception choice. Their catering department is also available to help you arrange a reception. The Venetian also has a great selection of entertainers available for you to hire for your reception, if you wish. Some of the entertainment that they can provide includes musicians, Italian and opera singers, a magician, and a juggler. So if you have always dreamed of a wedding in romantic Venice, but a trip all the way to Italy is not possible, all you need to do is hop the next plane to Las Vegas and the Venetian can help make all your wedding dreams come true. Veggies 101 - The Zucchini

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Joe Johnson Italian for “small gourd”, zucchini have become as common a staple to the North American household as carrots or corn. Especially loved by gardeners for their simple growing requirements and their abundant harvest, zucchini are a versatile food that is good for your waistline, heart, and taste buds! Description Members of the Cucurbitaceae family (like other squash), zucchini is typically long and cylindrical and has a thin freckled skin, similar to a cucumber. But, fruit from this member of the Italian marrow squash can also be found in round and other odd shapes. Zucchini is often grown for its yellow flowers, used before they develop fruit. Zucchini are a mandatory component for creating the dish ratatouille. They are perfect when combined with oil, butter, or frying. Their flavour can be mild, so zucchini often needs a little boost in flavor by adding spices such as garlic, thyme, or rosemary, or by being paired with other vegetables. One of our favorite dishes simply combines diced zucchini with corn, red peppers, onions, and jalapenos, tossed with a bit of our pork and poultry rub and oil, then roasted until caramelized. The color of zucchini varies from yellow to near black to lighter shades of green, some with stripes and others without. Many varieties exhibit various degrees of speckling, and others have ridges resembling a cucumber. While found in their dark green form in many market stalls, don’t be surprised to find them called “grisette” (grey) in Provence, or “Aurore” or “Reine-des-Noires” depending on their shade of green. In addition to being named by their color, they may be referred to by their regional name, such as courgette, summer squash, or marrow squash. Nutritional Value Rich in carotene, pectin, Vitamins A and B, zucchini also provides heart healthy fiber, folic acid, potassium, and magnesium, with extremely low levels of fat and sodium. Buying Zucchini Although the zucchini is available year round, summer is without question the best time to buy because its prime growth period is late summer. This is also the point in the season where its flavor is at its peak. Zucchini tastes best when young, small, and heavy for its size. Look for firm zucchini that is regular in shape without blemishes or yellow patches, and with a tight, shiny skin. Smaller zucchini are preferable, since as they get bigger their flesh becomes stringy, tough, and bland, and the number of seeds within increases. Storage Zucchini has the best shelf life when kept in a dark, cool place. Kept dry in a plastic bag, zucchini should last at least one week in the refrigerator. Whole or sliced zucchini do not take well to freezing because of their high water content. However, it is possible to shred or grate the zucchini, squeeze out excess moisture, and then freeze it. This is nice for when you want to use zucchini in baked applications such as zucchini bread. Cooking Tips Zucchini can be prepared in a variety of ways, which makes it a great vegetable for use in virtually any dish. Be careful though…few things are less appetizing than overcooked zucchini, which becomes mushy, limp and sometimes bitter. Steaming: Toss steamed zucchini into a casserole or nibble on individual slices for a healthy snack. Zucchini can be steamed whole, sliced, or diced. Boiling: Boil whole zucchini over medium heat in an uncovered pot filled halfway with water. It takes less than 10 minutes. Remember to wash and slice off the ends first. Frying: Make a crispy appetizer or party item by dipping unpeeled slices in an egg wash and breadcrumbs, and then fry in hot vegetable oil. A traditional item that has made a comeback on expensive dinner menus is fried zucchini flowers. Baby zucchini flowers are usually stuffed with some sort of savory filling, dipped in an egg and flour mixture, and either deep fried in oil or placed on a griddle and flipped like pancakes. Baking: Zucchini is delicious oven roasted–either alone or with other vegetables. For a simple side-dish full of flavor, simply drizzle slices of zucchini with olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast in a 350 oven until tender (length of time depends on thickness of slices). You can also substitute zucchini in your banana bread or pumpkin bread recipe to make the classic zucchini bread - a real treat that even your kids will love. Grilling: If you find yourself facing a large size zucchini, you don’t necessarily have to throw it away. Slice into 1/2 - 3/4 inch rounds, drizzle with olive oil, season with your favorite dry rub, and throw them on the grill for about 8 - 10 minutes. Grilled, seasoned zucchini adds a whole new dimension of flavor to your sandwiches, lasagna, pasta sauces, pizza toppings, or casseroles. How To Approach Your Professor - For Help or to Answer Questions Outside of Class

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Kristie Lorette College professors are there to guide you and teach you throughout your course of study. This is true whether you are involved in an undergraduate or graduate program. If you are having problems with a particular class, one of the first places that you should seek help is from your professor. In this article you will find advice on how you can go about approaching your professor for help. It will also detail out what you should do when you actually meet with him or her. How to Approach Your Professor Contact Most professors can be contacted in a couple of different ways. Professors tend to have office hours set up at least once or twice a week. This is a time for students to come by and speak with them if they need help, guidance, or assistance. You can usually find this information on the course syllabus. If you cannot make it to your professor’s office hours or you miss their office hours you can also check the syllabus for alternative methods of contact, such as a phone number or email address. Prepare for Your Meeting Once you have scheduled a meeting with your professor, prepare for your meeting ahead of time. Be prepared, so that you can get straight to the point when you arrive and get all of your questions answered before you leave. Especially if you are meeting with your professor during office hours there will be a short timeframe for you to get help because other students will be waiting to see him or her. Also professors are very busy teaching classes, conducting research, etc., so their office hours do not tend to be that long. Questions Prepare a list of questions to take to your meeting with you. This will keep you focused and on track and won’t allow you to forget anything. If you are efficient you should be able to accomplish everything in one meeting, rather than having to keep coming back with further questions. Supporting Materials Bring anything with you that is class-related and/or related to your questions or concerns. If you need to refer to a textbook, mark the pages so that you can turn to them quickly. Come Prepared Bring something to write with and write on to the meeting with you. Your professors may provide you with the information that you need and you will want to write it down, so you don’t forget. Also you may want to refer back to these notes as a record of your meeting. At the Meeting Be On Time Show up for you meeting with your professor a few minutes ahead of the scheduled time. You may have to wait for a few minutes but it is better that you have to wait than to keep your professor waiting. If you need to cancel or reschedule your meeting, be sure you call your professor and give them advance notice. Be Respectful Address your professor by his or her title and last name. Tell him or her your reason for requesting the meeting and ask him/her for help, advice, etc. Listen very politely to everything that your professor has to say. Don’t interrupt or get argumentative. Express Gratitude Be sure to thank your professor for their time when your meeting is over. If you need to schedule another appointment then try to do so at this time. Franchise Agreements and Opening of Business

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Lance Winslow Many people do not understand that it takes months of preparation to open the franchised outlet. I can remember times, When franchised buyers were shocked to learn that it could take up to 60 days to start their business from the time they paid their franchise fee & signed the franchise agreement. Imagine how long it takes to open a hotel or a fast food restaurant that is not even built yet. It might take years to get through planning commission, purchased the property and build it. Our franchise company was relatively simple, and that is because it was a mobile franchised business, home-based. Nevertheless, we had to address this issue in our franchise agreement so that buyers understood what was ahead. Below is a clause that I designed and put into each franchise agreement. 3.8 Opening of Business Before Franchisee commences business operations Franchisee must have all licenses, certificates, registrations, insurance, environmental requirements and permits current with any local, regional, state or national governmental agency requiring such. Franchisee must also have completed training, purchased their vehicle(s), purchased, taken delivery of and installed the required equipment on their mobile car wash trucks/units and purchased and taken delivery of the additional required equipment and supplies. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, Franchisee must commence full and continuous operation of the Franchised Business within sixty (60) calendar days of the date this Agreement is executed. Thereafter, Franchisee must continually operate the Franchised Business as a full-time business enterprise. Franchisee understands that both Franchisee and Franchisor may be allowed more than sixty (60) days in case of unforeseen problems with delivery. Franchisee may delay delivery time and subsequently the length of time to the opening of their Franchised Business due to Franchisees inability to secure financing in a reasonable time. If Franchisee is delayed in commencing business operations for causes reasonably beyond the control of Franchisee, then the time for performance by Franchisee will be extended for a period equivalent to the time of the delay. If this commencement of operation obligation is not fulfilled, Franchisor may terminate this Agreement. — — — — —- It would be wise to discuss strategies to address this issue in the franchise agreement if you are a franchising company or executive. In fact it is essential that you discuss this with a knowledgeable and experienced franchise attorney. Consider this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. How Movies Can Help You Find True Romance, If You Are Shy

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Maria Grace If you are having a hard time finding Mr. or Mrs. Right because you are shy, an introvert, or a little rusty on your social skills, besides using the self-help tips you read every day in books and articles, I suggest you watch The 40 Year-Old Virgin. It is a delightful movie with a very strong message: the road to true happiness always goes through the heart. The central character, Andy Stitzer, is a mild-mannered, introverted, 40 year-old bachelor who lives with his action figure collection and works in a dead-end job at an electronics store. Andy has never had sex, period. To make matters worse, his virginity becomes public knowledge at the store where he works, as hes falling in love with a woman who does not want sex in the relationship. The movie shows how Andy finds his emotional and sexual maturityand happinessby staying true to himself, taking risks, and doing what is ultimately good for him in spite of peer pressure and other peoples expectations. In the process, he handles a rollercoaster of experiences that range from rejection, ridicule and humiliation to standing up for himself, showing up for his friends, and letting go of his infantile attachments. In the end, he gets what hes always wanted, wished and deserved: romantic fulfillment coupled with sexual bliss. Here are some points to consider: 1. Notice how this movie portrays friendship among men. Watch how the men bond to help each other in times of distress. If you are a man, how does the movie reflect your friendship with other men? Does it inspire you to make improvements? If you a woman, what does this movie teach you about mens friendships? 2. Notice how the movie celebrates women over 40. How does it influence your attitude toward women and aging? 3. Notice how the movie treats the fine balance between sex and ethics in the workplace. Compare this film to Disclosure, an older movie that also addresses sexuality in the workplace but from a different angle. Pay attention how Andy handles his bosss advancements staying true to himself and how he gets promoted based on merit and not on sexual favors. How does he inspire you to stay true to your own values when ethical or moral controversy arises in the workplace? 4. Notice how the movie portrays genuineness as a sign of intelligence and inner strength and how being inauthentic is portrayed as being stupid and lacking self-confidence. How does that inspire you to deal with the challenges to your own genuineness? 5. Notice how Andy wins teenage Marlas trust and respect by telling the truth about his virginity while he also supports her struggle for sexual liberation. This is how he teaches young Marla by example that sexuality is not a matter to be treated lightly because of the emotional and psychological cost it may cause. How does Andys approach inspire you to deal with judgmental, mistrusting, rebellious teenagers in your lifewho are also in desperate need of guidance and sound advice? Following your heart may not be easy, but its definitely rewarding. Only if you follow your heart will you know the path you were really meant to take in life. You have only one life to live. Why not make that the life your heart really wants? For inspiration to follow your heart I recommend that you also watch: Must Love Dogs and Hitch. Sclerotherapy: Out With Spider Veins, In With Sexy Legs

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Nelson Lee Novick Its summer. The weather is beautiful, the water warm and inviting. Its time once again for shorts and swimsuits. Oh, no! you grown. I cant go out like in that with these ugly old spider veins all over my legs. Sounds familiar. Well, its a common complaint for the millions of people who have these unsightly little blood vessels. Spider veins, so called because the arms of these tiny dilated blood vessels appear to project outward from a central denser area like the legs of a spider from its torso, are also called sunburst varicosities, for a similar reason, or telangiectasias (broken blood vessels). In fact, they are simply diminutive, thick venules (literally: little veins) that lie close to the surface of the skin. And because they principally carry deoxygenated blood (blood that is not saturated with oxygen needed by the tissues) they actually serve no useful function. Even nutrition-wise, it is the function of the the blood vessels hidden below the surface, within the dermis, that carry nutrients to the skin. In short, spider veins are just a plain, disfiguring nuisance. The precise cause of these unwanted vessels is still the subject of investigation. However, we believe that they develop as a result of a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. There is often a strong family history for their formation. You might find, for example, a mother, daughter and sister suffering the same problem. Elevated estrogen levels appear also to aggravate the problem. You might find that the condition worsens, for example, during pregnancy or while on birth control pills. It is also more common in people whose jobs require them to be on their feet a great deal, in overweight individuals, and in those who have sustained some kind of injury to the area, including blunt trauma, cuts, lacerations, or even surgical procedures. Whatever they are called and however they come about, countless numbers of women and men want them gone. Despite the advent of lasers, sclerotherapy is still considered the gold standard treatment and the commonest method for getting rid of them. Sclero, literally means scar, and sclerotherapy works by irritating the lining of the unwanted blood vessels to such an extent that they collapse upon themselves and eventually scar over and disappear from view entirely. For this purpose, your doctor can choose from a number of different sclerosing agents, including super concentrated salt solution (hypertonic saline). Very tiny, dense mats or conglomerations of red blood vessels, known as telangiectatic matting is difficult to treat with sclerotherapy and may respond better to laser therapy. On the other extreme, larger varicose blood vessels are best treated by such procedures as venous stripping and ligation, ambulatory phlebectomy and the newer radiofrequency surgical technique. One of the major advantages of sclerotherapy is that it is fast and simple. A typical treatment session may take only about fifteen to thirty minutes depending upon the size of the area to be treated. A very tiny needle, smaller than most sewing needles, is inserted into the venule and the sclerosing material is then injected until it and the vessels in the region immediately surrounding it fade from view as the solution courses through. Each subsequent site is injected in a similar fashion until the entire area to be treated is completed. No anesthetic is typically required, although occasionally a topical anesthetic cream, such as EMLA or ELA-MAX may be applied. Some pricking, stinging or burning may accompany the injection. Doctors frequently cover the sites with compression bandages consisting of cotton balls that are taped in place and left for three days. Others also recommend that support hosiery be worn for several days or weeks afterward. A soothing anesthetic, moisturizing cream, such as Lida Mantle cream, may also be prescribed. While some patients obtain satisfactory overall improvement after one treatment session, it is more common to require two or more treatments, spaced at four to six week intervals, to the same area in order to obtain a satisfactory cosmetic result. Each session can be expected to yield a 50 percent improvement in appearance, but of course the results are highly individual. And, unfortunately, eliminating existing blood vessels does nothing to prevent new ones from developing at a later date requiring additional treatment sessions. Individuals with diabetes, heart disease or circulatory problems are not considered good candidates for the procedure. Some mild leg cramping, bruising or redness may occur following treatment, but patients typically return to work or social activities right away (ie. no down time). Clots that may need to be drained and temporary coffee-colored skin staining also sometimes occurs. Rare, but more severe reactions include the formation of clots, local or systemic allergic reactions, to the sclerosing solution, skin ulcerations and scarring. Thankfully, the latter complications are uncommon. So, if you really cant stand anymore to see those unsightly strands and networks of blues, purples and reds coursing along your legs, now, before the summer brings a new season for embarassment, would a great time to see your doctor about sclerotherapy. 3 Little-Known Facts You Need To Know About Antidepressants

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Chris Green It is widely believed that antidepressant drugs are the best treatment for stress, depression and anxiety. After consulting with their health professional, many sufferers will be put on a course of antidepressants, but how effective are these drugs? Not very, in fact they cannot provide a permanent cure and here are the reasons why. A good way for antidepressants to help sufferers is to “kick start” the process towards full recovery. By raising levels of serotonin, the “happy chemical” within the brain, the sufferer receives a boost and it is crucial that the root cause of stress, depression and anxiety is also treated at this time. The root cause of all if these is harmful, flawed modes of thinking and in addressing the cause, a lasting cure will be found. This is the main reason why no drug has proven to be more effective than any other and why antidepressants are ineffective for two thirds of sufferers. Antidepressant drugs are used to treat stress, depression and anxiety because of an alleged “chemical imbalance” within the brains of sufferers. What this means is that there is a lack of a chemical responsible for regulating our moods called Serotonin. If there is a lack of serotonin in the brain, is this then the root cause of anxiety, depression and stress? Unfortunately, there is no evidence at all to support this theory. Indeed, low levels of serotonin are a symptom of stress, depression and anxiety. The issue here is that treating one of the many symptoms of these problems will only mask the cause and will therefore be unable to provide a complete cure. When it comes to treating anxiety and depression, the common belief held by sufferers and health professionals is that antidepressant drugs such as Effexor, Prozac, Zoloft, and Celexa for example - are the most effective treatment. The problem with using drugs to treat anxiety and depression is that they only treat one of the symptoms - reduced levels of serotonin, a “happy chemical” in the brain. As soon as a person stops taking the drug, the root cause will surface and another episode of suffering results. Drugs may help you feel better in the short term, but they cannot offer you a cure. You’re now aware as to why antidepressants shouldn’t form the main treatment for stress, anxiety and depression. There are far more effective treatements, especially cognitive and behavioral therapies, that can provide you with a lasting cure because they treat the root cause. Please ensure that these are also part of your treatment. Please Note: If you are taking a course of antidepressant medication, please do not stop taking your medication until you have consulted with your health professional. They will be able to advise you on how best to withdraw from the medication in a fully controlled, safe way. Chris Green conquered 5 years of anxiety and depression without taking antidepressants. Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Davinos Greeno Have you realized how much time you spend, and how much energy you use when shopping? Are you sick and tired of having to waste this precious time, when you could be spending it with your family, chilling out or doing something of your choice? If so, then you need to start looking into deliver services in your area. Delivery services are becoming more and more popular as the growth of the internet means that nearly everybody has access to a computer and can save time by ordering online. You can even save money as its not as easy to get tempted into impulse buying when you cant see the packaging in front of you. Just think, no more dragging young children around the supermarket and watching in dismay as they try to pull everything off the shelves! At the moment nearly every region in the UK has a delivery service that is easy to find online, GuideMeGreen has loads of local and national organic, fair-trade and special diet delivery services with an increasing range of food and non-food products. You often have to sign up or register with these sites and then you can begin your shopping right away, They are easy and fun and so convenient that you will find yourself with almost too much time on your hands! Obviously, different companies offer different foods for delivery but you can often buy most if not all of your favourite groceries and more from these companies. You can find a vast selection of fruits and vegetables, both organic, locally grown and sometimes imported. You will find exotic fruits and vegetables as well as the old staples like potatoes and carrots. No matter what you need you can get it from these great food services. You will also find a huge selection of organic dried and canned goods that you can have delivered right to your door any day of the week. Canned soup and dried pasta are just a few of the great items you can have delivered to you each week. Most of these services even have goodies like organic cookies and even some organic cakes! Many companies have non food lines such as eco friendly washing and laundry products. You will get a choice of delivery. You may choose to have your food delivered after work or while you are at work. Many people choose to have their shopping dropped off while they are at work so that they are there when they get home. You can even ask that the goods be left in the back garden or with a neighbour so that they do not get stolen. Organic food delivery services are flexible and convenient and they are something that every one can benefit from. The increasing number of people using these services is testament to that. The choice comes when you decide which ones to use should it be supermarkets where you can buy anything and everything in one go or should you support the smaller companies where you may not be able to buy everything that you are used to.ill let you decide.
