Let Them Eat Cake — Just Not at Your Wedding

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Blake Kritzberg It’s a fact, however odd it seems, that some brides don’t like cake — and don’t want one at their wedding reception. Others like cake just fine, but prefer to serve something a little more distinctive for dessert. On the whole, brides pass up cake at their wedding because they: don’t like it want something nontraditional and edgy and are bored by “the norm” want something that more personally represents them or their geographical area attended too many catered weddings where no one touches the cake because they’d already had a full meal plus dessert have a venue that tacks on high cake serving fees I must admit I’m tempted to stare when someone tells me “they just don’t like cake.” Because, as everyone knows, wedding cake is no longer just cake. Wedding cake has morphed into something that, in the right hands, borders on a religious experience. Today’s chefs know that a good cake — one light years away from the “packing material” type cake of old — is full of delicious, creamy fat. And not that horrifying vegetable shortening, either. The modern wedding cake is loaded with real butter, moist base material (poppy seed cake, pound cake, carrot cake, banana, chocolate, red velvet and more) and tempting fillings (amaretto, chocolate mousse, tiramisu, raspberry, white chocolate). The exterior, too, has gotten sleeker and lovelier in response to today’s streamlined bridal fashions. All the former hallmarks of questionable taste — fountains, pillars, mugging couples on a cake topper — are gone. So how can any bride resist? Many don’t, but a few persevere in wanting something else. Fortunately, weddings these days are about personal choice and individuality — they don’t have to have one. And the alternatives to cake are many. The secret to a satisfying wedding cake alternative is simple — presentation. Whatever you’re serving, stack it in tiers. Follow this simple tip and you can turn almost anything into food fit for the most special occasion. Tiered puddings and mousses Pre-chill wine or champagne glasses, and fill with: Chocolate, chocolate orange, lemon mousse Rice, coconut rice or wild rice pudding Raspberry, hazelnut or regular tiramisu White chocolate, key lime, blackberry or biscotti parfaits Heavy whipped cream, topped with sweet in-season berries If your budget’s ample, you can also stack up individual-sized Caramel, anise, pumpkin flan Crme brulee — regular, eggnog, blueberry, espresso, coconut Tiered Pastries Cream puffs are king — and for good reason. Remember that cream puffs don’t have to be round; you can use cookie cutters to fashion them into lots of creative shapes. You can also go beyond them and stack up: Gooey cinnamon rolls Funnel cakes Baklava Souffls served in individual custard cups Cream horns, clairs, St. Joseph’s pastries, sfogliatelle, cannoli, napoleons, baba rum Straight from the Shelf You won’t be the first bride to try this. Stack those tiers high and proud or create an entire freestanding “cake” with: Sno Balls, Suzy Qs, HoHos, Ding Dongs, Twinkies Krispy Kreme donuts, Moon Pies Other Options Chocolate-dipped fruit Chocolate truffles A chocolate fountain Sugar cookies or brownies with your initials in cellophane wrappers Fancy pies: key lime, lemon, chocolate pecan, coconut custard, cranberry apple, macadamia nut, peanut butter and white chocolate cream. Whatever you choose, try to retain the cake-cutting part of your ceremony. The cutting of the cake is an ancient ritual and a powerful symbol of unity between the couple and their guests. It doesn’t matter if you’re really digging into a lemon meringue pie — your guests will still want to ooh and ahh as you cut it together and feed each other. Blake Kritzberg is editor of FavorIdeas. What Garden Plants Bloom Every Year?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Thomas Straub Various plants have their own individual life span. Plants that live for one growing season or just one year, are called annuals. On the other hand, plants that grow and bloom again, year after year, are called perennials. There are two types of perennial plants; herbaceous perennials and woody perennials. Most flower perennials fall in the herbaceous category. Shrubs and rose bushes make up the woody perennials. Annuals Although they may last only one year, annuals can be easily grown from seeds and propagate by seed as well. There is quite a variety to choose from at your nearby garden center that are easy to transplant directly into your own garden. The best time to plant sprouting and young annuals is right after any danger of frost is over. You can find out typically when the growing season begins, in your area of the country, from your local garden center or possibly from a farmer’s almanac. Another good source of information for growing seasons for different areas would be the independent farmers association accessed through your chamber of commerce or local library. Every kind of annual has its particular needs for sunlight and water. To get longer lasting plants and more colorful blooms in your garden, make sure that your annuals get the correct amount of sun exposure and water. Perennials Perennials are just like annuals, since they both propagate by seed and are easily grown from seed. Yet, there are several important differences. Some perennials might not bloom during the initial year of growth and will not attain their full size for at least two years and sometimes even for three or four years. Perennials are prized by many gardeners for their vibrant, colored blossoms, along with the fact that hey will return, with no replanting, every year. Similar to annuals, these plants also have certain needs for sun exposure, watering and fertilizing. Bulbs, Rhizomes and Tubers Day Lilies, Iris, and Tulips have root systems with bulbs, rhizomes and tubers like most other perennial plants. Perennials and annuals that are planted from seed, differ in the fact that the bulbs and rhizomes require at least two full months of temperatures below 40 degrees F in order to bloom. Since they need this cooler temperature, this kind of plant should usually be planted in the fall. Perennials may slumber all winter, but will thrive and blossom come next Spring. ——— Tom Straub is a successful author, and webmaster of the Best Gardening Tips web site, where you can read more on Gardening and more than a dozen other gardening topics. Fun Kid Fall Activity Ideas Using Apples

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Nancy Johnson Fall is the season for apples. Fun kid fall activity ideas include apple arts and crafts, games, and yummy cooking projects. September 26 is Johnny Appleseeds birthday, so plan a party with apples as the theme. Make a pretty apple garland with dried apple slices. Slice apples into 1/8 thick across the core. Soak in lemon juice and salt (1 tablespoon salt per 1 cup of lemon juice) for 20 minutes. The lemon juice and salt preserves the apple slices and keeps them from turning brown. Pat the slices dry and lay on a baking pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and ground cloves, and bake at 150 degrees for about 6 hours or until they look and feel leathery. Have kids gather pretty fall leaves to add to the fall garland. Make a small hole through the center of the apple slices and leaves. Cut fall ribbon or fabric into 1 x 6 pieces. You will need lots of apple slices, leaves, and ribbon pieces for a long garland. To string the garland, thread an apple slice and several leaves onto jute string, and tie a ribbon bow onto the string. Repeat this pattern until the garland is the desired length. Tie autumn colored ribbon on each end to secure. Kids can take turns working on this fall craft activity until it is long enough to hang in the classroom or at home. Kid friendly cooking recipes include making caramel apples slices and homemade applesauce. Melt about 25 caramel pieces with one tablespoon of water over low-heat. Core apples and slice to about 1 thick. Toss slices in melted caramel and roll in chopped peanuts. Cool the caramel apple slices on wax paper. Homemade applesauce cooking smells wonderful. Peel, core and quarter 4 medium apples and place in pot. Add one cup of water to apples and bring to a boil. Turn to simmer and cook for 5 to 10 minutes or until apples are tender. Add cup brown sugar, teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of butter and heat thoroughly. Mash the apples with a potato masher and cool. Play apple games such as the popular bobbing for apples in a large bucket of water, or try biting into an apple tied to a string. How about having a relay race by pushing an apple to the finish line with your nose? Dont forget there is always the Apple for the Teacher! Grandkids and Crafts

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Lenore Chapman Have you ever done crafts with your grandkids? I have and the fun of it all is unbelievable. I do the crafts with my grandson, and you would not believe the things we have made. The small thing from a drawn picture with the popsicle frame to a t-shirt with a picture of him ironed on and his hand prints around it. Yes it is fun. I thought my daughter and son-in-law was the type, that if it wasn’t bought it wasn’t good enough. Man was I totally wrong. Christmas was on it’s way. My grandson was old enough to know that you were suppose to give Christmas presents. My first time doing a project so important to him. Making mommy and daddy a present that they would like. Let me tell you, they loved them. First we made his hand print in plaster of Paris. What a trip. We had a time getting the hand print just right. Then it hit me….This is a little kid…..nothing is suppose to be perfect. Well the hand prints were in place…now what. I put on my thinking cap. Wallaaaaaaa. Why not print out the poem “Little Finger Prints”. So I did and around it I had pictures of him when he was a toddler. Put it in a frame and stood it up behind the hand prints in the plaster of Paris. One the plaster of Paris dried, I painted it blue and let the paint dry…. Grandma and grandson was pleased. We took care of mommy’s Christmas present, but now for daddy’s. On with the thinking cap again. Wallaaaaaaaaaa. Let’s do something with a t-shirt. Back to the computer and printer. We found a good picture of Tristan when he was little. Printed it out. Now we got and iron-on for a t-shirt. Need something to go with it. We took a dish and dumped paint in it and in goes the little hands and hand prints on the t-shirt around the picture. Job well done. You talk about a proud little boy… He was even prouder when Christmas morning came and he gave them their presents. I wanted to cry. I didn’t think mommy and daddy would be so happy with their presents. I really under estimated them. They loved them. As for my daughter and Christmas, I make sure I make her atleast one thing for Christmas. I always thought that she thought, oh another one of moms junk crafts, until one Christmas she told how much she likes my homemade things. That really surprised me and made me feel good. It’s not the store bought things that mean the most, it’s the things that you take time to make for someone you love, that means more. Anyone can go shopping and buy something that means a lot to someone but the best satisfaction of a gift, is when you make it and see how much it means to someone. There is a big difference. But the most satisfaction of all of this is when you sit and make gifts with your grandson and see his face when the gift is done and when he wraps it up and gives it to his mommy and daddy. Ten Things You Can Do to Help Control Your Appetite - You Can Finally Get Your Weight Under Control

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Lili James Get started today with these tips to help you shed those unwanted pounds and inches. Loose weight naturally and easily with a few changes in your everyday routine. 1. Eat Well Balanced Meals - Meals that are packed with nutrition are what you should put in your body. Junk food will make you unhealthy, more hungry and in the long run, fatter. Make sure your meals consist of leafy green vegetables, fiber, heart healthy fats, little to no refined sugars, no trans fats and only good wholesome foods and beverages. 2. Dont Starve Yourself - Trying to lose weight by starving yourself is about as smart as depriving yourself of oxygen to try to save air. When you starve yourself, you are doing more harm than good — your brain suffers, your heart is weakened, your skin look older and wrinkles set in, your looks deteriorate and your common sense goes out of the window. Yes, you will lose, but the weight will still be there. 3. Eat Enough High Fiber Foods - Foods that are high in fiber are more satisfying and they keep you feeling full for longer periods so that you eat less as the day go by. High fiber foods are usually more healthy that those that are low in fiber and this keeps you healthier throughout your life. 4. Eat Only When You Are Hungry - If you are not hungry then you should not eat anything. Eating when you are not hungry is like training your body for a food marathon, the difference is that this marathon lasts your entire life. Dont train yourself to eat just because. Eat at specified times and eat sensibly. 5. Get Up and Move Around - Stop lounging around looking at exercise programs. Get moving. You do not need to invest hundreds of dollars in exercise equipment to get started - a walk around the neighborhood is enough to get you directed toward the road to better health and a better looking body. 6. Start a New Hobby - The joys — of knitting a new scarf, wearing those earrings you made, presenting your loved ones with a handmade gift or assembling a doll house — are fantastic and the time spent creating these treasures will help to calm your appetite. 7. Do Not Skip Meals and Snacks - Skipping meals during the day will cause you to overeat late in the evening. Eating late in the evening will cause you to gain weight if you go to bed soon after eating. Skipping meals also causes extreme hunger which leads us to make unwise choices when we do eat. 8. Become Emotionally Fit - So many people eat when they are emotionally strained. The foods chosen are usually high fat sweet gooey foods or overly salty chips and crackers that are sure to cause weight gain and other health related problems. Loose the baggage. 9. Stop Eating After 20 Minutes - One way to keep your appetite and weight under control is to eat slowly and stop eating after approximately 20 minutes. 20 minutes is plenty of time for you to fuel your body with enough food to last for three or four hours. 10. Get a Good Nights Sleep - Lack of sleep will cause you to make unwise food choices and you will probably overeat during the entire day and into the late evening. Sufficient sleep will give you a refreshed mind, body and spirit. After practicing these natural weight control tips, you will soon be in the habit of making wise food choices and the extra weight will find that it is no longer welcome and it will go away. http://www.NecessaryInfo.info Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lili_James http://EzineArticles.com/?Ten-Things-You-Can-Do-to-Help-Control-Your-Appetite—You-Can-Finally-Get-Your-Weight-Under-Control&id=505777 phentermine diet pills com phentermine 37.5 mg overnight shippimg no prescription online prescription for phentermine phentermine online with mastercard

Sodding and Seeding Your Lawn

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Terry Blackburn Site Preparation Whether seeding or sodding, home lawn quality is closely tied into how well the soil and site were prepared prior to lawn establishment. Taking shortcuts often comes back to haunt the homeowner in the form of chronic lawn problems, such as thatch, weeds, and disease. Eliminating weed problems existing on the site is an important first step. Perennial weeds, such as quackgrass, need to be controlled prior to seeding or sodding the lawn. One option is to dig them out by hand, making sure roots and stems are completely removed. Another option is to use a translocated (moves within plant) nonselective herbicide, such as glyphosate (sold as Roundup and other trade names). Glufosinate ammonium (Finale) does not translocate, so may only provide limited control of perennial weeds. Both herbicides don’t leave active soil residues that would harm seedlings. Read, understand, and follow all label directions. Another important step in preparing for lawn establishment is to thoroughly work the soil (by rotary tiller) before seeding or sodding. Amend poor soils, such as heavy clay, by adding organic matter. Sources include compost, rotted manure, peat, and quality topsoil. Incorporate these materials into the existing soil, rather than layering them on the surface. Sand is not suggested as a material to improve clay soils for home lawns. Six inches or more of well prepared soil is suggested. Soil testing is also suggested prior to establishment. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Office on how to get a soil test. Key information revealed by soil testing includes soil pH and amount of available nutrients such as phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). If major modifications are needed, it is easier to make these prior to establishing the lawn and lawns will get off to a better start when soils are modified prior to establishment. Lawn grasses prefer soil pH values between 6.0 and 7.0 (slightly acidic). Lower soil pH (make more acidic) by adding elemental sulfur. Raise soil pH (make more alkaline) by adding limestone. Only add these materials when soil tests indicate a need and base the rate on soil test results. Starter fertilizers may also be mixed into the soil surface prior to lawn establishment. Starter fertilizers typically have balanced ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N, P, K), such as 10-10-10 or 12-12-12. Soil test results may reveal nutrient shortages which would influence how much starter fertilizer is needed. When preparing the soil, it’s important to establish a favorable final grade. Rough grading should include removal of any rocks or other debris. Avoid burying any construction debris, as this could cause problems for the grass later. Eliminate any depressions or raised areas. Final slopes should be one to two percent away from buildings (one to two feet drop per 100 feet of run) to assure good surface drainage. Seeding & Sodding Lawns Once the site is prepared and the proper grasses have been chosen, it’s time to plant the lawn. Deciding whether to seed or sod involves a number of factors, as outlined below. Assuming planting is done properly, the end result of a healthy lawn should be the same whether establishing via seeding or sodding.Comparing Seeding and Sodding Home Lawns Advantages of Seeding * Large choice of species and cultivars to use * Less expensive * Lawn develops on site Disdvantages of Seeding * Longer period to wait for useable lawn * Greater chance of weed invasions & erosion * Relatively short favorable time for establishment * May need to reseed Advantages of Sodding * ‘Instant’ lawn * Fewer weed invasions * Longer favorable time for establishment * Less erosion problems Disdvantages of Sodding * Expensive * Less choice in species and varieties * Potential soil incompatibility problems * Rooting speed varies Timing is critical to assure success when seeding lawns. Mid August to early September is the ideal time for seeding lawns and April would be a second choice. Seeding in late spring through mid-summer often leads to problems. Suggested seeding rates are found below. Exceeding rates may result in weak, spindly seedlings and potential disease development. Newly seeded grasses must receive adequate moisture to assure germination and early seedling survival. Putting down a light straw mulch can help prevent rapid drying and helps keep the soil in place until the grass is established. Use about one bale per 1,000 square feet. When sodding, purchase quality sod that has been freshly cut. Try to use sod that has been grown on a similar type of soil as exists on the site; most of northern Illinois has mineral soils so try to get sod grown on mineral soil. Install promptly. Stagger edges in a similar pattern as laying bricks. Avoid stretching sod or gaps between pieces of sod. New sod should be watered thoroughly after installation, and then frequently until the sod is established. Water should go down through the sod to moisten the soil underneath for good root development. Mow newly sodded lawns on a regular basis so that no more than one third of the grass height is removed in a single mowing. A height between two and three inches is suggested. Core aerify a sodded lawn after the sod has firmly rooted to the soil. Don’t fertilize newly sodded lawns until the next suggested time in the normal fertilizing schedule; details on these and other lawn care practices are discussed in other lessons of the Lawn Challenge. Suggested Seeding Rates for Lawn Grasses Species in Seed Mix Rate (pounds/1,000 sq.ft.) Kentucky bluegrass 1 to 3″ Kentucky bluegrass/perennial ryegrass 3 to 4″ Kentucky bluegrass/fine fescue 3 to 5″ Tall fescue 6 to 9″ Terry Blackburn. Avoid All Sorts of Debt Dangers with Debt Consolidation Program

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alex_Jonnes]Alex Jonnes Undoubtedly it can be said that for borrowers, facing debt danger is a nightmare. Besides, harassing and untimely calls of lenders are more than enough to spoil ones mental peace. In such cases, as a rescuer from debt danger, the popularity of debt consolidation program has been increased. In case of debt consolidation program, borrowers avail a single loan that combines all their unpaid debts into one. After that, in future borrowers have to pay on that single loan instead of different ones. Since, all debts are clustered into one, hence borrowers present interest rate is reduced and it enhances the probability of relatively low monthly payment. And by repaying all debts with a lower monthly payment, a borrower can easily handle his debts as well as can save money for other purposes. Apart from loans, debt consolidation can be done through mortgage, remortgage credit cards, and home equity. All sorts of borrowers, homeowner as well as tenants, can manage their debts with debt consolidation program, as debt consolidation can be done both in secured and unsecured ways. Pledging a security is the main criteria, in case one wants to consolidate his debts in secured form. Oppositely, there is no requirement of security in unsecured option. Since, presence of security lessens the risk of lending money; hence getting secured options at a better interest rate is not so tough. But, if anybody fails to pay off the amount, his security will be at risk. Though, such kind of threat is absent in unsecured option, but the absence of security compels lenders in charging high interest rate on these loans. However, by shopping for the best deal, getting these loans at an affordable rate is not so impossible. Secured debt consolidation program allows borrowers to borrow the amount, ranging from ₤5000-₤75000. The borrowed amount decides the repayment period, though generally it varies within 5-25 years. Whereas, in case of unsecured debt consolidation program, borrowers get a chance to borrow anything in between ₤5000- ₤25000 for 5-10 years. Here, it is required to mention that the borrowers having poor credit score also can get the benefit of debt consolidation program. Combing various debts and quenching debt burden- aiming at this motto, mainly debt consolidation program is customized. But some of its other benefits are not inescapable as well. These are like, these loans enable a bad credit scorer to repair his/her credit score, it puts an end to the harassing and untimely calls of lenders and it assists borrowers in going towards a debt free future. Alex Jonnes is associated with Easy Debt Consolidations. He is Masters in Business Administration and writes on various finance related topics.
