Henry Doubleday Research Association

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Hugh Harris-Evans The Henry Doubleday Research Association is a UK charity that promotes organic gardening. The charity was established in 1954 by a man named Lawrence D Hills because of his fascination with one particular plant, namely Russian Comfrey (Symphytum uplandicum). But what was so special about this plant, and why did Lawrence Hills find it so interesting, and what was the connection with Henry Doubleday? These are some of the questions that this article willl attempt to answer. Henry Doubleday who was born in 1813, was a member of the family whose ancestors sailed with William Penn to Pennsylvania and founded Doubleday & Company Inc. Henry was a great experimenter but not much of a business man. He patented a glue that was used on the first postage stamps, and it was the possibility that comfrey might provide a gum that first drew his attention to the plant. Henry ordered some plants from Russia and the seedlings he received were a rare cross between the common white-flowered comfrey and the Caucasian variety which has sky-blue flowers. This strain proved to be very vigorous and he achieved the then unheard of yield of 100 tons an acre. Comfrey was promoted as a forage crop and Henry spent the last thirty years of his life engaged in research on the plant that it was his dream would feed a hungry world. After Henry’s death in 1902 his relations disposed of his belongings and all his records were destroyed. Following changes in farming practices, comfrey fell out of favour and was only grown by a few enthusiasts. It was in the autumn of 1948 that Lawrence Hills claims to have seen his first comfrey plant. There followed a lifelong love affair with the plant and its use both for organic gardeners and as a high protein crop for feeding stock. In one of his many books on the subject he confessed “From that day to this I have never lived further away from a comfrey plant than a hundred feet and, more than any woman has, this crop has changed my life”. At that time Lawrence was working for his uncle on an estate in Norfolk, and it was here that his first experiments with the crop were carried out. Following a breakdown in his health, he left the estate and developed his career as a freelance writer for farming and gardening magazines. The publicity gained from his writing prompted a request from a Canadian seed company for 5000 plants which he was unable to supply as he had none. However he was able to persuade a friend to fulfill the order, and he helped with the digging and packing of the plants. The goodwill generated by this transaction provided Lawrence with sufficient funds to acquire some land to start his trials. In December 1954 Lawrence moved to Bocking in Essex and leased three-quarters of an acre of land which was to become his first trial ground. He needed a name for the informal organisation that was growing out of the fan-mail from his book and articles on comfrey, and so the Henry Doubleday Research Association was born. Are You Looking to Change Jobs or Just Find One?

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Dennis Mecca Resume writing may seem like the most daunting task ever. It is one of the most important things you must do if you hope to get the sought after interview with the decision maker. I can still recall a time in my early twenties that a job I had taken was not working out. It was a sales job at a company a friend was a partner in. After resigning my very stable job with a fortune 100 company and moving across the country, I found out it really wasn’t everything I had hoped it would be. I should have asked more questions, but I was of the mindset that I could do anything I set my mind to. Anyway, I then had to write my own resume. It seemed like the most difficult thing to do and the pressure was on. Looking back on it now, I made it so difficult on myself. It’s really not that hard. Take your time. Do your homework! It will pay off. Think of it as your ticket to get in the door to meet the decision maker. The bottom line is, that’s your goal, to get your chance to say hello in person, to meet the decision maker and to get a sense of chemistry and move forward from there. There are so many resources available on the internet that were not available at that time. Some are free, while others charge for access. Fortunately for me, I had a good friend in Foster City that spent time with me to create my resume. Putting together a resume is the first step in the process. The next step is the interview. That’s when you really have to do some preparation. Just be yourself. Fourteen Reasons Why Dieting Is Bad For Your Health

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Paul Wilson 1. The lower the calories eaten per day, the harder it is for you to get your daily requirements of proteins and vitamins. 2. Dieting makes your body believe it is starving so it starts to save fat, as this is its best way to store energy. 3. Losing weight means digesting your own body tissues instead of food and unfortunately, dieting does not tell your body what parts it needs to digest or which parts to save. 4. Severe dieting causes muscle loss and if you are unlucky the loss may be from your heart with severe consequences. 5. Dieting will make you difficult to live with and your family may want to kill you. 6. Dieting changes your body chemistry and one effect may be bad breath. 7. If you’re a smoker you may smoke even more to dull the hunger pangs. 8. Binge eating, generally with very unsuitable foods often follows dieting. 9. Dieting makes you food obsessed. 10. Breaking a diet often results in guilt, poor self esteem and despair often followed by comfort eating. 11. Dieting emphasises food as a reward or compensation - so called ‘comfort eating’ where food is used to cheer us up or because it’s raining we are somehow entitled to eat lots of sweets or cakes. 12. Dieting lowers the base metabolic rate which means you can live on less food, so when you return to your normal food intake which was already too high, you put on weight even faster than before and will probably end up heavier than before the diet. 13. Dieting does nothing to teach you to eat healthily. Healthy eating does not mean going hungry. 14. Dieting often causes constipation and this concentrates toxins and carcinogens within the bowels and they are present for a longer period. Fruit and vegetables have a positively beneficial effect on the smooth running of your digestive system. Attention! Understanding the History of Reiki and Its Many Benefits

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Chris Robertson Reiki healing is growing in popularity around the Western world. The word “Reiki” is Japanese and means “Universal Life Energy.” A Japanese theologian named Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Reiki healing system at the end of the last century. He discovered the ancient healing system after studying Sanskrit texts in a Buddhist monastery. Though the texts revealed the knowledge needed, Dr. Usui still had to undergo three weeks of fasting and meditation before receiving the healing empowerment of the Reiki system. An American woman named Hawayo Takata brought the Reiki system to the Western world. Takata was cured of a tumor at a Reiki clinic in Japan, and then totally dedicated her life to Reiki. She was trained by a Japanese master named Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. During her life, Takata created 22 Reiki Masters to carry on the methods. Channeling Healing Energy Reiki is best known for being used as a channel for energy to provide a safe healing method. It promotes good health and well being and can be experienced by people of all ages, whether in good health or stricken by illness. By replenishing a person’s life force energy, their body’s immune system can be strengthened. This helps the body in its fight against disease. A Reiki healer channels energy to a welcoming receiver. The person receiving Reiki experiences a warm, relaxing feeling in their soul, mind and body. The experience is just as much spiritual as it is physical. Benefits of Reiki Reiki healing offers many benefits. It is often used for stress management and to help the body fight and prevent sickness. As Reiki energy is channeled to an individual, they can relax and relieve their stress. This helps the person feel better and think more clearly. The more Reiki energy they can receive, the better they will feel. When a sick or stress-prone person receives Reiki, their body becomes free to help itself become healthier than ever. Other benefits of Reiki include healed relationships, finding one’s Divine Purpose, manifesting life goals, awakening the healer within, cleansing the body from toxins, enhancing creativity, and many others. To offer so many benefits, Reiki is surprisingly gentle and nurturing. It is not a harsh medical treatment, but can be far more powerful for the individual who opens their mind, heart and soul to the process wholly and freely. How it Works After an initiation to Reiki, called Reiki Attunement, and learning about Reiki symbols, the individual is introduced to Reiki energy through several methods, including crystals and crystal healing, drumming healing, meditations, and other stress management techniques. Even many modern chiropractors, psychotherapists, medical doctors, psychologists and other medical professionals are beginning to realize the benefits of Reiki. More and more people are tapping into Reiki energy to experience a fuller, healthier life. Dangers of Inattentive Cellular Phone Use

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand When people are talking on a mobile phone, they’re often paying less attention than they should to what’s going on around them. This can be dangerous in certain situations, such as around building sites or — particularly — when driving a car. One extreme case, which came to light on the international press wire services this summer, told of a man picked up while driving in the Israeli town of Netanya with a mobile phone glued to each ear. The man had become so engrossed in his conversations that he had taken to steering with his elbows — and was flagged down by a policewoman who had noticed his car weaving treacherously from side to side. While this is an exaggerated example, the use of mobile phones while driving is considered sufficiently dangerous by many governments that it is banned in at least a dozen countries, including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. The problem of social alienation is perhaps the hardest to pin down, yet is potentially one of the most destructive results of a world over-reliant on wireless communications. Sociologists are already beginning to note that many people, especially those under 30 years old, are spending a great deal of time speaking to people they are not with, at the expense of those who are actually there. A telling example comes from Finland, which has over 60% mobile penetration. There, entire groups of young people sitting together are frequently seen to be talking on their mobile phones to absent friends and colleagues. It’s the ultimate in social alienation, and indicative, say some, of a trend which threatens to eat away at our sense of social cohesion. Whether it’s the novelty of the technology or our simple need to feel wanted, the human brain seems to register incoming electronic signals as inherently more urgent and important than the interpersonal signals coming from a fellow human being in front of us. Team this with an almost universal desire to avoid personal contact — witness the popularity of every kind of impersonal invention, from e-mail and the Internet to automatic teller machines — and it’s clear that alienation could prove a serious side effect of a technology whose selling point until now has often focused on slogans like “It’s about communications between people” or “Connecting People”. On the other hand cellular telephony has brought great and new freedoms for youngsters — and increased security and peace of mind for their parents. It is now possible for young people equipped with cell phones to stay in touch with their parents and for parents to stay in touch with their children. This can help reduce or eliminate the need for meaningless restrictions on young people that were only in place because of parents’ anxiety as to their childrens’ activities or whereabouts. Costs need not even be a major issue, since these can be controlled through the use of pre-paid cards. Aside from yet-unanswered questions relating to health, the positive use of mobile technologies lies largely in our hands — in the hands of government, when it comes to environmental issues and safety regulations; in the hands of operators, who can do much to ensure the smooth integration of the technology into our society, both in terms of equipment design and aesthetics, and through initiatives which help train people in mobile phone etiquette; in the hands of employers, who can take pains to ensure staff with corporate mobiles are not abused; and ultimately, in the hands of users, who need to cultivate a greater level of awareness and work to ensure that their phone use does not negatively impact the lives of those around them. With a little effort on everyone’s part, the benefits of mobile connectivity should serve to enhance our experience of life, offering us more freedom, and ultimately creating a better society in which people really do feel closer together. Saving on Utility Bills

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Albert Sharp Its getting cold outside again and the last thing you want to worry about is unreasonably expensive utility bills. So here are a few proven energy consumption-lowering solutions for you to consider implementing that you can do yourself for unbelievable results. To keep gas consumption in check there is six things that you can do that I will discuss here that will lower the bills and keep you happy. But lets concentrate on the electric use first.Turn off lights that are not in use. If you cant remember to do that you can go to your local hardware store and purchase motion sensitive light switches, which will automatically turn off lights if they dont sense any motion in a room in a given amount of time. You can also switch all of your light bulbs to Halogen bulbs 75watt bulbs only use 15watts of power saving you 80% for the same light quality. The prices of these bulbs have come down quite a bit, and you can experience good savings. If you own or run a multi-unit apartment building or such with common areas that must be well lit at all times its the only way to go.Opening shades and blinds during the daylight hours is also a simple way to add natural light to your home and it does not cost you anything.Natural gas savings is a whole different animal. To lower that bill is going to take a little real work on your part but trust me you can do it. So lets get started. The first thing that youll want to do is eliminate any and all cold drafts coming in through your windows and doors. This can be done fairly easily on a budget by going to your local hardware store and purchasing Window and door insulating kits. The door kits are made of a felt like material and are easy to install. Window kits have thin sheets of plastic and two-sided tape. They are also easy to install but youll need a hair dryer to heat and seal the plastic.Vinyl window installation is a much better fix for drafty windows and adds value to your home. They look difficult to install but all you really need is a hammer, screwdriver, and a drill with screw bits. You can install one in 45 minutes to an hour. Once installed youll never have to worry about drafty windows again. Most cities have a window and door warehouse in the area and you only need good measurements to get a perfect fit.Insulation is also a good solution for lowering heating bills. Insulation provides a blanket for your home and keeps the heat from leaving the house quickly. Many home Improvement stores will rent blowers for the blow-in type of insulation and buying the bags of blow-in insulation is relatively cheep an has as good an insulating rating as anything else out there.Use your Fireplace if you have one to heat your living room and add ambiance to your living space. You should have chimneys checked and cleaned by professionals at least yearly before use.Now that youre warm and cozy and feeling no drafts with the thermostat turned down. Light up that fireplace and cuddle with that significant other so you both can feel warm inside and out. Albert Sharp is a Detroit area motor carrier officer, and former real estate investor. If the Fish Do Not Bite

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Stephanie Manley If the fish do not bite, move to more fertile waters. Often we see someone that we find attractive, and while we put on the best face we can, they are uninterested. If someone is truly interested in you, they will make that known. You will not need to continue to place yourself on audition for the, and get no results, if someone is interested they will show it. If that person that you have you eye on isnt taking the bait, move to where someone is. Call it irony, call it Gods good blessing, that everyone isnt attracted to everyone else. There will always be not so great choices, and some wonderful choices out there. Is it by design that not everyone attracts you in a romantic way, or is it just a good thing. With this in mind, you shouldnt get discouraged when that other person isnt interested enough in you to pursue a relationship. So if you are extending out invitations, your phone calls arent being returned, and the person isnt open to spending time with you because they are too busy, let it go. If you call people to dinner they come, and if they dont, guess what, they arent hungry. You need to cut these outpourings within a reasonable time before people become uncomfortable. It isnt about being antisocial; it is about you not wasting your time. If people are interested, they return phone calls. They do show up when you invite them, and they do make an effort to spend time with you. Watch for these signs. Yes, some people are off to slow starts, and thats ok; just make sure youre getting positive feedback. If you are getting lukewarm feedback, it is time for you to rethink your position on this particular person, and see if it is a slow start, or if it is simply time to move on. One thing to remember when you are looking for a potential partner is that you are getting positive feedback. This is in returned phone calls, they show up when you invite them, and they are willing to do their share in keeping lines of communication open. If they are doing less than that, that person isnt as interested in you as you are in them. So before you get a lot invested into a lukewarm relationship, simply look elsewhere for that special person. Wedded Bliss

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Kenneth C. Hoffman As a former wedding photographer, there have been many moments that have earned a permanent place in my memory. That biggest of first steps seems to create either an atmosphere of happy wedding memories or one of matrimonial disaster. The greatest fiasco occurred at one hour before the wedding, when the bride, having been given a few tranquilizers to calm her down, locked herself in her bedroom and refused to come out. No amount of pleading had any effect at all. Finally everyone except the photographer (myself) and the brides mom left for the church, taking with them all the limousines and cars. The bride eventually stopped crying and I had to transport them both to the church. I dont want to leave the groom out of matrimonial disasters. One groom decided at the last moment NOT to get married at all. One hour of heavy coaxing successfully changed his mind and he agreed to go to the ceremony. Half way through, he fainted dead away from the stress and had to be revived by a doctor in the church. Another bride was so happy that she decided to climb a tree in the park. She was very good at climbing up, but terrible at getting down. The groom said no way was he going up there and the ushers had to get her down. The biggest unplanned event happened at a summer wedding when the temperature climbed to over one hundred degrees. This was a tent reception on a large estate with a large, beautiful fountain on the premises. You guessed it. The best man was the first to go in. Next went the other ushers in full tuxedos (rented) and the bridesmaids were quickly stripped of their shoes and thrown in. The Reverend decided that he had nothing to lose and jumped in, too, blessing everyone from the waist high water. The next day I filled out the one inch space reserved for comments on the wedding and two sheets of paper besides. Other episodes include a bride and groom that got locked out on a roof for over two hours, a newlywed couple that disappeared to their hotel roomm for an hour right after the toast to the bride and groom, and a couple who took a wrong turning in the church after the ceremony and had to climb out of a cellar window to get out of the church. I still remember a bride bouquet passing through a ceiling fan to be torn to shreds before landing like confetti on the bridesmaids heads. Though my own wedding was not nearly as exciting, I am occasionally surprised when I meet the happy couples yeas later to relive those crazy wedding moments.
